Orange Shirt Day - Day of Reconciliation This day is designed to acknowledge the 150,000 school aged First Nations, Metis and Inuit children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities in order to attend residential schools. The purpose of residential school system was to separate children from the influences of their parents and their community, so as to destroy their culture. Generations of Aboriginal children attended these schools from the 1830’s to the last residential school to close in 1996; tragically over 4,000 children did not make it home. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school in Williams Lake and from a story of a young girl named Phyllis whose orange shirt was taken away upon entering residential school. Today we spent half our class working on our research questions and assignment on medicinal plants and the other half looking at vaccines, allergies and HIV and AIDS. We have our research Qs and medicinal plant assignment due tomorrow and a quiz on Chp 3 vocab Friday. Tomorrow we will also spend half a class on our Science Fair projects...make sure to choose a topic quickly if you haven't already. Feeding day for our pet snake Cob today!
Today we started to tackle the Immune System. We looked at our different lines of defense and then started to do some research on medicinal plants and more specifically those used by the first nations communities. Tomorrow we will continue our research, take a look at allergies and vaccines and we will have a Chp 3 vocab quiz this Friday. *** Chapter 3 test will be next week on Wednesday as this is a short chapter.
Terry Fox Run This coming Wednesday is the Terry Fox run! Unfortunately, due to our current COVID-19 situation, we can't do our annual school run, but that doesn't mean that we can't still TRY like Terry did. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox run and we encourage you to find a way to participate and fundraise. Click the set up your own fundraising page or to donate: Today in Science we spent the day reviewing for our Chp 1 test (notes and jeopardy) tomorrow and then we had some left over time for catch up on our assignments. Make sure to review your "A Savoir" sheet, your notes and have a look over your text also.
Today we had half a class dedicated to working on our 3D cell projects and the other half dedicated to reviewing for our Chapter 1 test Friday.
Today we had a heavy amount of material that we covered. We took at look at:
- bacteria vs viruses - parts and functions of plant and animal cells - diffusion and osmosis We also introduced our 3D cell model which we will be working on over the next two days (due Friday), and we wrote our microscope quiz (class avg 11/12). *** Chapter 1 test on cells will be this Friday!!! I would start reviewing early.
Today we started Chapter 1 on cells and living things. We also spent some time getting used to using a microscope. We will have a quiz on the parts and functions of the compound microscope Monday.
Today we wrote our safety quiz which the majority of students did well on, followed by some time to wrap up yesterday's lab and other work. We then Introduced our Science Fair project. Tomorrow we get to jump into Chapter 1 on living things (biology)
